Just because a person addicted to alcohol denies the extent of the problem and minimizes the risk they are placing on themselves and others doesn’t mean they believe it. Addiction is miserable for the person addicted even worse than it is for the family who has to watch the person lose everything, No one wants to be an alcoholic. Deep down inside, any alcoholic secretly seeks to hang on to the hope that they too might one day be “normal” again. After extended alcohol use and after many failed attempts at getting clean and sober on their own, or with help, a person addicted can come to “know” that they are beyond help and that the life of misery and shame they are stuck in is all they will ever know again. That is, on the surface the person knows this. Underneath, most people addicted still carry a glimpse of hope. Most people addicted still carry a dream that something magic will come along and change everything. This is why alcohol intervention works if properly done. A true alcohol intervention counselor knows they are working with the addicted person for the addicted person. They are not battling with the person themselves. The intervention counselor is battling with the addiction.
Alcohol intervention means to intervene into a situation and change its direction or outcome. This can be not only difficult but it can also be very critical since the usage of alcohol can be dangerous for themselves and those around them. Life threatening consequences loom behind every decision made, sober or not. The decision to get behind the wheel of the car and drive while intoxicated, the decision to drink more than the body can stand, the decision to fight the very people who love the person and truly desire the person to be happy and live a more enjoyable life.
