When approaching a drug intervention, especially involving cocaine, heroin, prescription drugs, heavy alcohol and others, you want to get as much information as possible about the person’s drug use. There are very important safety factors that are going to need to be held in place since coming off some drugs and heavy alcohol can be dangerous or even life threatening. When a family member or friend is addicted to drugs, life can be chaotic and nerve racking on a daily basis. The expense of buying the drugs, the life style that can keep family members up for days at a time wondering if the person will come home, the not-there personality associated with a person who is currently using drugs. All of these things and more lead to continual heart break and concern for those who love the person. Still, there are other problems associated with drug use requiring very a structured drug intervention for those who seek to help the person back to a productive enjoyable life.

With drugs like opiate based drugs, Heroin, Oxycontin, Oxycodone and others, there is a very great likelihood of overdose with each usage. By the nature of the addictive state, a person addicted seeks to use more and more of the drugs to achieve the same high that they once did with a minimal amount. This pattern of usage puts the person in continual danger of using too much and having a heart attack or stroke and other major complication every time they use. These drugs are severely strong. They carry with them huge physical liabilities and require much care and concern when coming off them. During an intervention, when the person is addicted to the opiate type drugs there is a chance that the person will become very upset or emotionally unstable during the process. Many people in this, when confronted by family alone will leave abruptly during the process and go “get high”. As they are very emotionally stirred up they might end up using much more of the drug than normal, if for no other reason to “just show them”. This can and has many times resulted in overdose, sometimes fatal.

This doesn’t mean that the person is treated with kid gloves or given any and everything they want because of the threat of this concern. What it means is that the situation needs to be controlled, if at all possible and caution must be exerted to prevent any exaggerated usage from happening when the person is being confronted.

Our counselor will assist you through the drug intervention to ensure the person gets into a recovery program but also that all safety precautions are held in place so that the situation doesn’t take a very negative turn for the worse.

For drugs like prescription drugs especially, this concern was never more real and the threat of negative consequences never more valid. There are many prescription drugs that are life threatening to just come off of “cold turkey”. Some can cause respiratory failure, heart attack or seizure when abruptly coming off the drug so the person needs to be in consultation with a medical professional and go through medical detox or detox for short to ensure that they are medically safe when withdrawing from the drug of their choice.

Part of the process of our assistance during a drug intervention is proper planning to ensure medical safety and connecting you to medical facilities or personnel who will advise the exact steps to take based on the presenting drugs of choice. Drug intervention is critical to perform but also must be performed correctly. Let our intervention counselors begin the planning process with you today.
