The truth is that addiction is miserable. Addiction is miserable for the person addicted even worse than it is for the family who has to watch the person lose everything, No one wants to be a drug addict or alcoholic. Deep down inside, anyone addicted secretly seeks to hang on to the hope that they too might one day be “normal” again. After extended drug and alcohol use and after many failed attempts at getting clean on their own or with help a person addicted can come to “know” that they are beyond help and that the life of misery and shame they are stuck in is all they will ever know again. That is, on the surface the person knows this. Underneath, most people addicted still carry a glimpse of hope. Most people addicted still carry a dream that something magic will come along and change everything. This is why intervention works if properly done. A true intervention counselor knows they are working with the addicted person for the addicted person. They are not battling with the person themselves. The intervention counselor is battling with the addiction.
Intervention means to intervene into a situation and change its direction or outcome. This can be not only difficult but it can also be very critical since the usage of drugs and alcohol can be dangerous with overdose and other life threatening consequences looming over every decision.
An intervention then should include then an intervention counselor who specializes in handling this type situation. This specialist will guide preparation of those surrounding the person addicted as to exactly what to do. Once this has been accomplished the intervention counselor will approach the person addicted person in a semi formal setting and work with them directly to get them to realize where their life has gone to and what the solution to the many problems they now see can be; getting help.
Much research and planning has to be undertaken behind the scenes to ensure that the actually sit down intervention process is a success. Remember, this is a non violent intervention. The goal is to have the person addicted realize they have people who love them, their life is being shattered by their addiction and that there is hope via getting clean and sober with the help of a drug or alcohol rehab center. Heated confrontation alone usually ends up with the person addicted and everyone else in the area fighting and ultimately leaving effectively blowing any chance the person addicted has to realize they need help. This is dangerous as sometimes a person only has limited chances. A person never knows when a missed or botched opportunity will result in overdose, arrest or worse. |
