We strive to achieve the most desirable response to intervention that can be achieved given each individual circumstance. Every drug of choice is different, every familial situation is different and every person addicted is different. This is why much deliberation and planning must go into each and every intervention that is performed. It is the response to intervention that will dictate the success or failure of any intervention effort. The desired response, of course, is that the person will achieve the realization that they have become trapped by addiction, that they want a better life and that they are willing to seek help in achieving these newly found goals of sobriety. To achieve this response, the intervention process and methods have to be honest and reality based. Lies and deceptions will not work over the long haul. These feed the addiction with reasons why not to cease using drugs and alcohol. The truth, however, will be instrumental in guiding the person to the realizations they need to take this next step.

It is unfortunately common that intervention specialist and counselors will mislead the family or person addicted in order to get a quick and “painless” agreement to get help. After the dust settles, these unwitting victims will discover that the person addicted is now angry for having been lied to and distrustful of future intervention or rehabilitation efforts because of having been dealt with dishonestly.

The only true way to achieve the response to intervention that is required in order to save the person’s life is to be direct and honest with the choices presented and treat the person with the dignity and respect they know they ultimately would like in all of their life.
